Victor Dreisen leads a pleasant life as a single. At the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam he studies folk cultures. To the annoyance of his boss however he uses his weekends to make trips to different metropolises. Victor’s colleague Heleen who is secretly in love with him, often gets him out of trouble. When an uncle who has died in a psychiatric hospital leaves Victor a cottage in Koekange in a remote province of The Netherlands he decides to travel there and renovate the cottage. He tells his boss he is going to research local murder songs, in which gruesome crimes used to be narrated.
In Koekange Victor gets intrigued by one such murder song. It’s the horrifying story of a triple murder that has never been solved. The song is sung by Geesje, an attractive woman on a vessel, he starts a love affair with. The villagers seem to know more but hold their tongues. Victor even receives anonymous threats, sheep’s heads nailed to his door. Still he doesn’t give up and it seems he’s going to unravel the mystery. But can he still rely on his mind or are his discoveries really delusions? He can’t let go of Geesje and the murder mystery. For the solution he has a very high price to pay though.
