In 1969 the theater director Gennaro Vitiello obtained from Jean Genet the rights to translate and stage Les Nègres, which the French writer had never allowed to represent to companies of white actors. Vitiello, with a legendary letter, convinced him that in Italy the only "negroes" he knew were the Neapolitans. When, three years ago we saw the father of a boy who was shot dead at the age of fifteen (after attempting a robbery with a toy gun), first, at the demonstration for the death of George Floyd and, soon after, at the pickets of the organized unemployed movement in town, we thought that these connections deserve a thorough reflection. And, why not? A movie.
