    • Synopsis
    • Based on Nick Earls’ best-selling hilarious novel, World of Chickens is a valentine from the mid-‘80s, when Brisbane is the sprawling capital city of a state struggling with its own growing pains and desperate to be taken seriously.
A laugh out loud comedy with warmth and charm, World of Chickens will transport you back to a time of big hair, great music, political turmoil, adolescent awkwardness and some appalling fashion. Our hero, medical student, Phil has enough to deal with in his own life though. He needs to pass seemingly endless exams, save money for a possible internship in NYC and -if he’s going to get lucky with the ladies - he should probably also invest in more grown-up bed linen than his current “Steam trains of Great Britain” sheets.
His part-time job at the World of Chickens take-away chicken shop gets sticky when owner, Ron, wants to make Phil his new best buddy; Phil's best buddy, Frank has it bad for Ron's wife Zel; and business is down. Suddenly Phil finds he is the reluctant oracle on dental health, strategic planning and marriage guidance... all roles in which he is spectacularly unqualified.
No wonder he’s looking to get out of Brisbane via New York, city of his Woody Allen-inspired fantasies. Phil has to learn to spread his wings - to escape his full-on boss, his overbearing parents and ultra-conservative 1980s Brisbane.
Can Phil learn not to be chicken?
