    • In the winter of 1944, the Japanese military was recruiting labors forcibly in a village of northeast China. Facing the danger of family tree, the patriarch Si Ye orders his sons to fertilize their sister-in-law Kun whose husband is impotence. Lao Er refuses and runs away from his family. The immature little brother San Er passively accepts the request but is taken away by Japanese soldiers before success, leaving Kun and the old father at home.
      The frustrated eldest brother is brutally killed on the way to the headquarters. Because of his protection, San Er survives and flees back, hiding in the cellar with Kun’s undercover care. Si Ye prays all day for any chance to carry on their family line. He has no idea of the sons’ fate until he finds Kun pregnant.
      The war is drawing to a close. But the family concentrates on the unborn baby and pays no attention to the outside world. Considering his own safety, San Er tries to attack Kun. Meanwhile, Kun is forced to remarry a neighborhood’s fool under Si Ye’s protection attempt. She has to bear all the burden on her own. The newbie guerilla Lao Er occasionally comes home but cannot deal with the strange situation, only have a complex feeling for this always silent woman.
