Where the Elephants Roam follows the life of Anisha, a young South Asian teen trying to find her career path. She lives at home with her single Mom, Liara, on a fictional version of Toronto Island. The series starts in her last year at high school where she is also confused as to where to apply to College and is bullied for her darker skin at school classmates and cousins. A rumor is started that Anisha is adopted and when confronting her Mom, Liara shockingly confirms she was in fact adopted from India via Amsterdam.

Anisha goes into a downwind spiral. To make matters worse, she has been dealing with throbbing sensations in her head that have suddenly gotten worse. She decides to follow the throbbing sounds that lead her to an Elephant pavilion at the Island zoo where she meets the Elephant, Roja. The throbbing in her head had been Roja communicating with Anisha. She also discovers Priests from a fictitious Indian community, the Ayas, are using Roja in an inhumane way for their ceremonies. When confronting a Priest, Anisha falls and hits her head and her memory reemerges, much like an Elephant.

Anisha starts having vivid dreams about her past. She discovers details of her adoption, her lost parents and brother from Tamil Nadu and that her family ran an Elephant sanctuary where she had met Roja as a baby. Her advanced memory and hearing with Elephants came from prolonged exposure to them as an infant. She also finds out she was stolen by an illegal Baby Farm that sold babies to foreigners. She embarks on a journey of self discovery to seek out her natural family.
