    • Synopsis
    • This tale takes place during the on-going US-Sultanate war. The uneasy ceasefire that exists in the former USA is put in jeopardy by the Sultanate’s surprise attack on San Francisco. The Sultanate deploys an unusual Weapon of Magical Destruction: a water Elemental. A tsunami caused by the Undine – the Sultanate’s ‘water’ Elemental – is prevented from destroying the Golden Gate Bridge by the USA’s own ‘air’ Elemental – The Sylph, which uses its arctic ‘freeze’ breath. The balance of power is restored, but when the USA gets valuable intel that the Sultanate – in the shape of powerful shape-shifting General Abbas – may have located a third Elemental in the ruins of Mosul – the ‘fire’ Salamander – the USA’s top brass know they have to act fast.

A task force, consisting of witch Captain Migina Coon and her demonic black cat familiar, Cheshire plus two SEAL Werewolves – Roman Farkas and Chris Johnson – assemble. They head to the Middle East on Dragon Sargent Hector, followed by a magic carpet-and-broom sortie. They arrive not a moment too soon, as the incubus Karabasam has found the lamp and its contained Salamander for General Abbas. Roman and Chris try a little stealthy solo pilfering. Chris and Roman confront Abbas in his ferocious werelion form, as well as a dozen wizards who are ostensibly there to keep the Salamander contained until the creature has received its orders. When things go south, Migina puts stealth aside and uses a cunning intervention to persuade the Elemental back into the lamp until the oceans stop rising and conditions are better for a Fire Elemental. Migina tries to escape with the lamp and crashes her broom just as she succeeds in putting a containment spell on the lamp. Chris receives a devastating injury from the werelion. In fact, everything looks bleak, until Dragon Hector flies in to scatter the enemy. Migina, Cheshire, Roman and the injured Chris head stateside. The magical task force only partially succeeds in fulfilling its mission, yet the two warring parties come together for peace talks. At the armistice it is agreed that the Sultanate will retain the Eastern USA for twenty years, after which a referendum will determine the region’s future. Roman, furious with the top brass and worried about Chris, is rarely sober. Migina’s attempt to placate Roman causes them to end up in bed together – on the very night Chris dies. Devastated, Roman heads off to places unknown after Chris’s funeral.

Ten years pass. At Chris’s graveside Roman shares a beer with his much-missed partner and a stray mutt that he immediately christens Scruff. An attempted robbery, easily foiled by Roman, shows that Roman hasn’t lost his edge and that Scruff has very large fangs for such a small dog. Roman’s former superior, Wilson, contacts him and points him towards Migina, now an academic with a young daughter, Elia. Roman tells her that he’s put his werewolf days behind him. Wilson fears that with ten years gone by and Migina’s powerful containment spell failing, Abbas – now the governor of Eastern USA – will want to free the Salamander, the fire Elemental. Roman (no longer a werewolf), Migina and Wilson turn up to ‘steal’ the lamp, Abbas is already there and already a werelion. A fight ensues up and down Lady Liberty but Abbas still gets away with the lamp, while Roman is knocked out. Roman recovers at Migina’s place with the perky. Abbas and Karabasam, meanwhile, are unable to release the Elemental. They decide to kidnap Migina in order to use her great power to free the Salamander – the fire Elemental – but Elia and Cheshire spot Karabasam. Sleeping badly, Roman dreams of his absent buddy Chris, who sends him a warning. Waking to a distressing call from Migina, Roman hears Chris again – this time from the mouth of the little dog with big fangs: Scruff! It seems Chris’s soul has come back to provide assistance – the team is back together! Karabasam kidnaps Elia and as Roman pledges to find her, Migina drops the bombshell: Roman is the absent father! As the daughter of a witch and a shapeshifter, Elia may have the power to rival the Elemental’s.

Migina, Roman and Cheshire find Abbas’s Nevada hideout. Migina takes on werelion Abbas and Cheshire battles Karabasam, while Roman and Scruff attempt to free the chained Elia. In the titanic fight that ensues, Migina resists werelion Abbas and seriously injures him before ending up at his mercy. Fortunately, Roman and Scruff intervene and save her at the last moment. Everything seems lost, but the tattooed spell on Roman’s back that controls his werewolf nature is damaged, and werewolf Roman is back! Scruff saves Cheshire from drowning, and Roman forces Abbas to bottle the Salamander again. But Karabasam has Elia, and judging by Karabasam’s spell, he is about to take her and Abbas somewhere bad; a very long way away! But Scruff knocks Elia to safety as the bad guys disappear – back to Hell! Having saved the world (for the time-being, anyway) Migina and Roman fly home on Hector with Scruff, Cheshire and their daughter. They pledge to do whatever is necessary to protect Elia in the future.
