    • Secrets… Scandals… Abuse… Alcoholism… These are some of the topics covered in the powerful family drama entitled… “We Are Family”. Sammy Devroux is a crack addict who guides us through the life and times of her family which takes place mostly in a two story house located in Detroit Michigan. It is present day. Someone is murdered in the opening of the story but before it is revealed who it is we are taken back in time to 1986. The Devroux family has just moved into their new two-story home with their five children. Through flashbacks and Sammy’s voice over we are introduced to her father Henry, her mother Doreen, her four siblings, Miles, Kenny, Job and Gabrielle and her aunt and uncle Lorraine and Howard. Things are happy and joyful until the untimely death of Doreen occurs. Henry turns to alcohol for comfort and the children are now exposed to violent and brutal living conditions disguised as harsh forms of discipline. Years later it is revealed that Kenny (now a drug dealer and ex-con) has shot and killed Henry. Over the next three days during the wake and funeral of their father, each of the individual’s secrets are revealed, bad memories resurface and the last fabric of what holds this family together may be torn apart forever. Inspired by such films as “Soul Food”, “The Prince of Tides”, “Once Were Warriors” and “The Great Santini”… “We Are Family” is a story that touches the heart and soul of the reader and leaves you with a conclusion of hope and healing in the lives of five extraordinary people.
