    • wave vs. the shore is a documentary about the extraordinary generation of Slovak photographers got together at FAMU in Prague at the beginning of the 1980s and enriched the fine art photography by unconventional energy, playfulness and unchained imagination. Very quickly, the critics started referring to them as the SLOVAK NEW WAVE.

      Martin Štrba, himself one of them, in his directorial debut visits and interviews his friends and artistic colleagues and reconstructs the atmosphere of the period which gave rise to the Slovak New Wave phenomenon.

      Jano Pavlík, Rudo Prekop, Vasil Stanko, Tono Stano, Martin Štrba, Miro Švolík, Kamil Varga and Peter Župník brought a completely new creative vision of artistic photography and still active today, in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and abroad, they have continued to influence the development of the art of photography.

      wave vs. shore is a meeting of longtime friends and artists and their creative energy, a contemporary exploration of the role of the environment in which creativity and inspiration can overgrow into Slovak New Wave phenomenon. It is an unconventional documentary, formally following the inventiveness and playfulness of the film protagonists´ artistic approaches.

      Martin Štrba (1961) is one of the most recognized Slovak directors of photography active in Slovakia and Czech Republic. He has collaborated on numerous fiction and documentary films with renowned directors such as Martin Šulík, Vladimír Michálek, Jan Hřebejk, Agnieszka Holland. For his work, he has been awarded with numerous awards, including the national film awards and film critics awards, in both Slovakia and Czech Republic.

      He is also one of the photographers of the Slovak New Wave. wave vs. shore is his debut film as scriptwriter and director.
