    • In 1980s Britain, 3 million are unemployed. But few are as underemployed as Charlotte Baxter. She’s nearly 40, never had a job, or an education – in fact, Charlotte never had a hope in hell. Born with cerebral palsy at the tail end of World War II, she has no speech and little movement. The usual expectations of a young life have passed her by.

Charlotte Baxter (Lottie) the much wanted and waited for daughter of now divorced Maggie and Bob. The medical establishment deemed her a child with no intellectual capacity, or, in the language of the day, a ‘vegetable’ and a ‘spastic’.

Maggie refuses to put her in residential care - an asylum. After fierce resistance, Maggie finally accepts Lottie’s future as described to her by those ever-so-concerned doctors: that her beautiful girl will remain a ‘baby’, even as she becomes a woman.

So, Lottie lives a cossetted life with her mother. Life is dull. Relentlessly dull. And the only way Lottie escapes from her own reality is by immersing herself in 1980s pop videos, and dreaming of a life that will never be hers…
