Gema and Walékerü, two young girls from a small town in Guajira, face early marriage, in compliance with their families' customs. Seeking to defend their friendship, they take advantage of a visit from Walékerü's grandmother, arijuna and escape in hiding to Barranquilla, where they are discovered and flee again, getting lost in the bustling city. Alonso, a thriving rumba merchant, becomes their protector, until Gema and Walékerü's impulsiveness forces them to leave and face the risks of the street. Both of them will face the harshness of the city and temper their characters in the face of discrimination until they recognize that the path to reconciliation is to make amends and ask for forgiveness from all those they have hurt in their desire to stay together. The two will find the path that will lead them to maturity and growth in what they wish to do with their lives beyond the established destiny of marriage.
