    • 1462. Villon invites Dogis, de Moustier and Pichart to dinner to outline a possible heist. No privacy, they head back to Villon’s lodgings. Walking home past curfew they see a light in the office window of Maître Ferrebouc. Pichart taunts clerks working there who run outside. A fight ensues. Ferrebouc, who comes out to assist his clerks, strikes Dogis. Dogis stabs Ferrebouc who falls to the ground. Wounded, not dead. Everyone flees. Villon is arrested the next day. He awaits his sentence: hanging. Villon writes the Ballade des Pendus. He meets with stepfather Guillaume to appeal his case. Villon is a battered, bruised and broken man who looks twice his age. Parliament discusses his appeal. They reach a verdict which is handed down and finally reaches Villon. But we don’t know what the decision is…

      1438. Villon’s mother gets him ready in his best (read: not great) clothes to meet church lawyer Guillaume Villon, a man her deceased husband recommended. Villon’s mother explains that the Villon’s father died from smallpox when Villon was not even two years old. Guillaume tests Villon aptitude for learning who does brilliantly. Guillaume agrees to take Villon in and school him. Guillaume continues to teach Villon himself for five years until Villon is 12. Villon is an excellent student.

      1443. Guillaume wants to send him to the Faculté des Arts. Villon doesn’t want to go, he wants to stay with Guillaume. He feels like he’s being ripped away from his comfortable home yet again. Guillaume tells now teenage Villon he’s going to take him to see Estouteville for a dinner with the prévôt and mainly other important Parisians. They challenge him intellectually at dinner, Villon holds his own. After they leave, Estouteville acknowledges Villon is bright and actually likes him. Still, to him, Villon will always be just a poor kid from the wrong part of Paris. Villon graduates with a masters degree in 1452. Guillaume is very proud. Villon goes to find out what administration job he can hope for. But administration jobs are closed to him. He wants to find out what school scholarship he can get. He is barred from those as well. He becomes enraged. He needs money and works for La Grosse Margot. They have a decadent relationship. He can’t believe he’s reduced to working in a tavern/bordello. He spends more time with Regnier, Colin and Guy. They drink, gamble and undertake petty theft to earn extra spending money. Villon gets involved with de Vaucelles. He gets brutally beaten for defamation against her. Villon gets involved many other women. All the relationships go very poorly. Guillaume tries to console Villon.

      1455. Villon sits and talks to two friends. Sermoise and Le Mardi walk up. Sermoise has a grudge against Villon. They quarrel, insult each other, then fight. Villon’s friends flee. Le Mardi tries to lower the temperature. Sermoise cuts Villon’s lip. Villon stabs Sermoise, then hits him in the head with the stone. Uncertain if Sermoise is dead or alive…
