The fate of two families are intertwined with each other in the midst of their migration from Huzhou to Hangzhou. On a stifling hot Summer day, fourteen-year-old girl Li Senlin sees her father leave home on a business trip and senses something wrong with his sudden departure. She follows him, but falls into a fountain. When she returns home, her idea for her Summer essay is inspired by the surprise visit of Auntie Qiu, her mother’s old friend. Senlin weaves the stories of The Grand Canal from a decade earlier, with Auntie Qiu’s memory of her husband’s death, into her summer essay, which becomes as complicated as the random flicker of snow on a TV.
