- Synopsis
- Long disillusioned with life, joyless Iván (53) breeds grey cattle with his sister Mária (57) and niece Szonja (18) on an estate behind God's back. Their boring but peaceful life is turned upside down by the arrival of Iván's brother-in-law, the once celebrated theatre critic Jakab (55) and his second wife, Léna (31). As soon as they set foot in, Jakab reigns: although he is working on the book of his life, he is constantly unwell. His wife Léna is initially concerned about her husband's health, but soon grows tired of being a nurse and instead starts flirting with Iván and Iván's veterinarian friend Astrov. But Jakab’s daughter, Szonja, has also been in love with Astrov since she was a little girl. Léna, who soon realizes this, starts a dangerous game out of boredom: she offers Szonja to ask Astrov if he likes her. She knows that Astrov is not in love with Szonja. Lonely little Szonja, who has never had a girlfriend in her life, happily trusts Léna, who fools her badly: she spends the night with Astrov. Although Iván and Szonja are upset, they still stay in silence.
  When Iván makes Jakab realize that Sonia will soon turn 18 and that she will be able to take over her maternal inheritance, the estate, as an adult—leaving Jakab without any money —Jakab takes a big step: he places an advertisement to sell the estate so that he can share in it.
  Ivan is basically a peaceful man, accustomed to life not booing him much, but when he realizes what Jakab has done, all the repressed bitterness of the past few years erupts from him: he decides to kill Jakab. He shoots at him twice and also fails twice.
  Jakab and Léna rush to pack their bags and leave. Szonia also makes an abrupt decision to leave and start a new life. Iván returns to his old life and, realizing his own generosity, supports Szonja financially so that his niece can find her happiness and money will not be an obstacle to this.
