    • Synopsis
    • Between 1832 and 1834, with only 22 years, the once unknown English naturalist CHARLES DARWIN visited Argentina by joining the HMS Beagle expedition. The trip, of vital importance to his following theoretical elaborations, allowed him an interview with the already notorious JUAN MANUEL DE ROSAS, who was commanding a campaign against The Unfaithful, in the critical period that separated his two administrations. Darwin travels with the feverish impulse of curiosity and a fragile religious conviction. He is astounded, and sometimes frightened, by the disproportionate and wild southamerican nature. He has found unimaginable specimens in Brazil and traces of prehistoric animals in the immediate surroundings of Pehuen Có in the province of Buenos Aires. Meanwhile, the Brigadier General Don Juan Manuel de Rosas has left behind his first administration and concentrates on the south of the province of Buenos Aires, in his
campaign against the Unfaithful. From the capital, people are begging him to retake charge of the disgregation and anarchy that seem to have won over the incipient Conferedación Argentina.
Beyond Buenos Aires, the so-called frontier is a transitional space; military, landowners, fugitives, impostors, natives, explorers and naturalists submit to the unwritten rules of survival, nothing has a determined color, and no one can define the side they belong to.Young Darwin travels with some useless recommendation letters destined to the Brigadier, which will ease his transit through the hostile territory. An isolated camp, in the vast pampean desert, is also a rehearsal of a supposedly prehistoric way of life. A space where shadows become alive and the naturalist’s loneliness represents the eyes of the world, describing the landscape as if he were the first to grasp it, and creates the illusion that in this solitary instant, the possibility to preserve the original sight forever may exist... as if recognizing the place’s geologic antiquity transformed him into its first witness.Rosas’ shadow, the gigantic shadow of the Megatherium, the ever-slippery shadows of the camp and the long shadow of each one’s ghosts become alive projected against the wall canvas of these sometimes concrete, sometimes oniric, and always hallucinated space that is a solitary tent in the middle of the desert. A long dreamy night reunites them in the tent: the most powerful man South of Ecuador and the unknown explorer born north of Greenwich will have to make a determination, unbeknownst to them, that will not only change their lives, but also those of everyone surrounding them.
