- Synopsis
- In 17th Century Amsterdam, a period of “Tulip Mania” has gripped the land. With a single tulip bulb selling for more than 10 times the average person’s wages, the exotic flower could make - and break - fortunes. Yet for wealthy merchant Cornelis Sandvoort, true happiness lay in creating some semblance of immortality through a family with his much-younger bride, Sophia. But as the two fail to conceive, Cornelis commissions a portrait of them instead, rationalizing the work of art as a different kind of legacy. Only as the painting takes form does a powerful lust develop between Sophia and the handsome artist, Jan van Loos...leading to an entertaining and ever growing series of deceits and lies.
