- The Minnesota Checkers were not immediate friends: a deaf Black girl in foster care, a diamond-in-the-ruff from the wrong side of the tracks, a potential Olympic athlete, a God-fearing beauty, a natural comedienne, and a score of others, all fighting each other more than the other team.
  
  With no money, Coach May put together a team of girls, the only thing in common: a love of hockey.
  
  Along the way to championship in Helsinki, they made enemies, even the KGB trying to trick the girls into trouble. But some of their greatest enemies were themselves. To defeat both, they had to learn what was really important: Each other.
  
  The Checkers lived the true story of underdogs becoming champions. This film is not just for girls. Not just for hockey players. This is a film for all people who have been told that something they really want to do is impossible.
