    • Synopsis
    • A story of thwarted love and passion – dramatic and comic at the same time – set in Rome during the fascist “Ventennio”. The main character is the aged lawyer Rinaldo Maria Bonci Paonazzi, an alluring yet tragic figure who succumbs to an existential challenge to seduce a very young local girl who works at a dry cleaners. Her name is Eleonora Ciancarelli nicknamed Lolli, and she is the co-protagonist and off-screen narrator at the beginning of the film. Then, when she realises Rinaldo’s insincerity, she falls in love with Mario Marchetti, a university student who is also a boxer. At this point, Rinaldo becomes infatuated with her. He begins to lose control of his life, becoming gaunt and haggard, and his obsession leads to aggressive behaviour as he heads for a breakdown. Eventually he is called up for military service and sent to Spain with the fascist “Camicie Nere” (black shirts) at the height of the civil war. Meanwhile Lolli goes to Paris to join Mario who has fled Italy after being unfairly victimised; together they also decide to set out for Spain with the intention of joining the international brigade. But there are many surprises in store for Lolli…
