    • Synopsis
    • Kyoshi is a 27 year-old architect living in London. Born in Tokyo, he moved to England at the age
of five with his family. His father is the world-renowned Japanese novelist, Atsushi Fujikawa, who
became a national pop icon in Japan. Unable to cope with his popularity, Fujikawa and his family
fled to England, where they have remained ever since. At the age of fourteen, Kyoshi’s parents got
divorced. He grows up under the shadow of his famous father.
The film begins when Kyoshi receives a phone call from the hospital. He learns that his father has
slipped into a comatose state and may pass away anytime soon. He rushes to the hospital. His
father dies that afternoon. That night Kyoshi drives to his father’s house. While sitting at his
father’s writing desk, the telephone suddenly rings. Kyoshi picks it up. It is Kaori calling from
Tokyo. Time seems to stop. A series of flashbacks begins. We see Kyoshi, a few years younger, and
the very first time he meets Kaori...
A rainy day. Kyoshi arrives at his father’s house, soaking wet from head to toe. He has come to
tell his father that he is thinking of moving to Tokyo, even though he does not know anyone
there. But Fujikawa has a visitor; Kaori is a student from Tokyo who has come to interview his
father for her doctoral thesis. Their initial meeting is formal and a little awkward. Kaori quickly
excuses herself, leaving the father and son to get on with their business. On his drive back home,
Kyoshi spots Kaori waiting at the bus stop. It is raining heavily so he stops to ask her if she might
need a lift. She agrees. That was the beginning of a friendship.
Kyoshi begins to have feelings for Kaori. He confides in his best friend, Fiona, who, unbeknownst
to him, has been in love with him for a long time. Simultaneously, Kaori begins to develop a
relationship with Fujikawa, which quickly grows into a love affair. And life goes on its normal
course until one day it slips off tracks···.
