    • Synopsis
    • Through a shadow puppet show, the narrator recounts the backstory of the kingdoms where the story takes place. In the past, everything was a single kingdom, Dralianute, ruled by a wise emperor. Without children, upon the Emperor's death, the kingdom was disputed by two generals who believed themselves to be the natural successors. The kingdom was divided, giving rise to Drália and Anuat, which entered a war that would last many dynasties.

The narrator continues, still in the shadow puppet show. Without hope of winning, the King of Drália, filled with hatred, sought out the forest sorcerer, who revealed that only the firstborn son of the King of Drália could end the war.

The narration is interrupted when GONGOUR, guardian of Prince LORK, searches for the boy, who had been listening to the story told by DONA MÉRCIA, the castle's cook. Young Lork, 8 years old, needs to return to his princely duties and leave his friends MARIE, 7 years old, and CATHARINE, 3.

Despite his young age, King MARTIN forces Prince Lork to train tirelessly in archery, fencing, war strategies, and all types of combat. Master Gongour is responsible for keeping the prince in line, despite Lork's immense disinterest in these activities.

Lork prefers to read fairy tales, paint, and whenever possible, hidden from his father and Gongour, Lork runs to the courtyard of his friends' house, where he listens to stories and plays with the girls
