    • Synopsis
    • The Timekeeper is an adventure story set in the sixties in the wilderness of the Canadian North West Territories. The area being rich in profitable lead-zinc that must be transported down south, the Great Slave Lake Railway is under construction
Martin Bishop, a farm boy raised by his father, was taught all his life to be honest and good. At sixteen and recently orphaned, he has to fend for himself. He finds a job as a timekeeper on the railway crew. He lands up in an isolated camp in the middle of nowhere among one hundred drunks, half-wits and criminals recruited to lay track.
Prud’homme, the camp’s cook, considers his true calling to be an “oracle of doom” and exudes depravity. Fisk, the foreman, is out to make a buck and break backs: the crew must lay 52 miles of track in 52 days and works till the sun sets, near midnight in those parts. He fiddles with the railroaders’ working hours, won’t tolerate opposition and uses his ferocious dog to scare everybody. He also gets rid of anybody he doesn’t like, by casting them out in the wild forest. Those men become exiles in a new prison, eating garbage and fleeing the foreman’s posses. Strangely enough, they’re still on the payroll...
Martin, a lamb in a pack of wolves, refuses to play the game and disrupts the brutal rhythm of this wild gang. He tries to live by his father’s teachings, keeps his time logs accurate, challenges Fisk and, to the foreman’s chagrin, becomes friends with his dog.
But Martin goes a little too far and gets thrown out in the woods. He joins the other misfits, five men known as the Wilder Few. They spend their time trying to sabotage the railroad project, hoping to draw a posse after them. This way the camp will be left unguarded and they can steal food. With enough foodstuffs, they can make the long trek out to Hay River. But on the way, Martin will discover the not so clear-cut boundaries between good and evil.
“The Timekeeper” is a trip into the heart of darkness, complete with a daring escape along a river, cold murder, grizzly bears, initiation into adulthood, redemption and… many funny scenes.
