    • Synopsis
    • The framework for THE SQUARE is a European town square where, in spite of the utopian overtones, a "Common interest square" has been instated. Events inside or near the Square spin a thematic thread by way of two or more characters that we follow and build up a close relationship to.

The situations that unfold are examples of how we humans tend to act in public. The difficulties we face when we see another individual in need of assistance, when we are confronted with our insecurities, when the fear of violence and of losing face frightens us into a passive state—situations that are easy to relate to, but that give rise to difficult issues with regard to ourselves.

THE SQUARE is a thematic film, though it also aims at being emotionally affecting. As in Ruben Östlund’s previous work, the serious and the comedic will be side-by-side, sweeping viewers through a smorgasbord of emotions. THE SQUARE will be a thought provoking and visually outstanding comic tragedy or tragic comedy.
