    • Synopsis
    • As World War II rages in South East Asia, it desperately drives men of good character to become the ruthless pirates of Tarutao.
In 1938 the Thai government set up a penal colony on the remote Tarutao Island in Andaman Sea. The colony had no fence relying on deep sea infested with sharks and sea crocodiles, heavy monsoon and high waves to discourage prisoners from escape.
90 political prisoners were sent to Tarutao. The highly educated prisoners building their own bungalows, club house, co-ops and self-sustain farming. One prisoner was known to have written the very first English-Thai dictionary while serving time on Tarutao and another later became Ministry of Agriculture.
WW2 broke out in 1941, six British soldiers sent to capture two escaped British army prisoners on the island. They later captured by the invading Japanese troops and sent to the same camp with their two fugitives and an American prisoner, plotting an escape plan.
Because of the war, Bangkok stopped supplying food and medicine to Tarutao. A group of guards and prisoners robbed commercial ships around Penang and Kantang area. The piracy continued and became more violent. No one want to sail nearby the island because of the ruthless pirates of Tarutao.
On the island, while two groups of prisoners were fighting on the disagreement to join the pirates, the six British soldiers finally found a way to flee from Tarutao to Malaya around the end of WW2.
After the war the British returned to rule Malaya and Singapore and sent the former British prisoners of war on Tarutao to completely suppress the pirates.
Since then Tarutao was left in peace until it has become a one of the best diving spot and world-class national marine park until today.
