    • Synopsis
    • In 1917, Dr. Kronveld is appointed to a psychiatric clinic in Petrograd, with the task of evacuating patients as the front line draws dangerously close to the Russian capital. The doctor discovers a patient hidden in the janitor's ward. According to the clinic's official records, no patients should be there. The mad old woman identified herself as Antonina Milioukova, the widow of composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Intrigued, Dr. Kronveld goes to the library to consult the composer's biography. The librarian gives him Tchaikovsky's diaries and informs him that the published diaries are missing years of the composer's life.

Through a friend, Dr. Kronveld manages to meet Tchaikovsky's niece. She confirms that her uncle was indeed married to Antonina Milioukova, and shows him a family photo in which the doctor recognizes Antonina. The further Dr. Kronveld delves into the story of Antonina and Tchaikovsky, the more he believes her. He checks each and every fact, convincing himself that nothing is to be believed lightly, but everything confirms to him the veracity of the old madwoman's words. The head doctor gives Kronveld a scolding. He demands that visits to the sick Milioukova be stopped immediately. In case of recurrence, he will send Kronveld to the front, where there is a shortage of doctors.

But Dr. Kronveld can't stop now. He now has no doubt that the mysterious patient is Tchaikovsky's wife. The only thing he can't figure out is why she's being so carefully hidden. What secret in the composer's life do they wish to conceal?

Caught up in his investigations, the doctor feels he is beginning to lose his mind.
