Bonaci, a Corsican, goes to Venezuela and becomes obsessed with the search for gold. He sets up a successful gold mining business, but at the height of success the seam he has discovered runs out. The mine is sold in Paris to his rival.
Charles leaves in search for a new adventure: petroleum oil.

- Synopsis
- In 1870, Charles Bonaci arrives from Corsica to work with his uncle Paul in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela.
  Fascinated by the legends of gold, Charles travels to sell goods at the mining communities.
  Back in Ciudad Bolivar, he meets Lili, a widow and romance begins. But, Gauthier, also Lili's lover becomes jealous.
  Charles, obsessed with gold, finds two associates. Together they build the mine “Buenaventura” and discover gold.
  Charles's Corsican fiancee Lucienne arrives with a boy, their son. Charles was unaware of him, and tries to explain his innocence. Lili breaks off their relationship.
  Torrential rain threatens the mine. Barry, the Engineer, goes to America to buy equipment but run off with the money. Charles pays the company debts.
  At summer, Charles and Gregorio leave for “Buenaventura” and find a very pure and valuable gold. Profits are up. A town grows up around the mine.
  Charles’s nickname is 'King of the Orinoco'. He gives to charity, and subsidises artists and scientists.
  The purity of gold decreases. “Buenaventura” is declared bankrupt. Soldiers rebels occupy the mine, confiscating the gold.
  The mine is sold in Paris to Gauthier who has managed a clever taker-over.
  Charles leaves,in search for a new adventure: petroleum oil.
