In a remote area in Karnataka in southern India, a young photojournalist Ananda meets Chenni, a girl who was made a 'Basavi' at the alter of the village deity to save people who were hit by a devastating epidemic. 'Basavi' is a cult very similar to that of the 'Devdasi' who have become regular sex workers because of the social stigma. When he learns about Chenni's mysterious lifestyle, Ananda is shocked and hence tries to enlighten her about blind faith. When he insists that she should get married, Chenni wonders if Ananda would accept her. But he is not bold enough to take the plunge. The next morning when Chenni is found dead on the steps of a temple pond, Ananda feels guilty for Chenni's death since he was not daring enough to give her a new life. He succeeded in getting her out of her blind faith but was unable to give her an alternative.
