    • Synopsis
    • As a world war rages somewhere in the background, Philippe, a deserter, has fled from Quebec to the U.S. Utterly alone, with no money and nowhere to go, he competes in Charlie Chaplin impersonation contests to survive. When his last possessions are stolen, he is left with nothing more than his iconic Chaplin costume, wandering the magnificent and hostile expanses of the American West. Along the way, he meets characters driven by a terrifying and destructive madness, a symptom of the pervading darkness of the violent and chaotic times. Through this strange array of strange and enigmatic characters – an innocent, talkative talent agent, the widow of a soldier killed in battle, who shares her life with a very unusual animal companion, a travelling salesman who makes prophetic speeches – he confronts all the frightening delirium of America under a world war. Trying to keep his head along his hallucinatory journey, Philippe finds that the promises of the American dream have become a hopeless deception. He needs everything he’s got to resist the insanity around him – and to make it home safe and sound.
