    • Synopsis
    • Sophie, a young and inexperienced sound designer, completes work on Marie-Anne’s slasher film. They have been friends since film school but this is their first real collaboration. Sophie is excited, but deeply stressed as their final deadline approaches quickly. For inspiration she decides to exile herself to the same cabin location from the film to complete her work.

Sophie is a creature of habit and works according to a very strict routine; perfectly structured and ordered. Simple. Effective. Organized. Marie-Anne is the complete opposite and tends to float along through life, so when Marie-Anne’s attitude changes and she gives Sophie harsh and scathing feedback on her work, it shocks Sophie and throws her off her work regimen. Desperate to appease Marie-Anne, she stumbles upon an errant note in one of her notebooks: “The fear frequency”; a sonic tone beneath the threshold of human hearing thought to trigger anxiety and discomfort in listeners and, possibly paranormal events.

Anxious for a solution to the problems in the film, Sophie generates the frequency and layers it over a scene. This decision sparks a descent into paranormal hell. She begins to experience horrid sleep paralysis; locked in place as dark figures watch over her and pace around the cabin. The film world blends with her reality and she finds herself surrounded by the horrific characters of the film she edits. Time becomes malleable as day and night blends together. She records foley and hears other-worldly sounds through her sensitive microphone. The house literally shakes at its foundations, disrupted by the low frequency.

As the paranormal events worsen and she falls deeper into the film and the infrasound, she must make the difficult decision of whether to quit the project and disappoint her close friend or press on and sacrifice her fragile mental health in the process. A story of the power and physiological nature of sound through cinema.
