    • Arguably, no man and woman together have had a greater impact on the twentieth century than the inventor whose creations made World Wars possible and the woman he gallantly loved, an activist who inspired the Nobel Peace Prize.

COUNTESS BERTHA VON KINSKY is the daughter of an Austrian Field Marshall. When her mother and aunts gamble away the family fortune and the prince that she was about marry dies at sea, she is forced to seek paid employment. She falls in love with her employer, one of the richest and most powerful men in the world – ALFRED NOBEL.

Frustrated at his lack of willingness to commit, Bertha elopes with ARTHUR VON SUTTNER, eight years her junior, the son of a couple for whom she had been a governess. They flee to the Caucasus, where border battles open Bertha’s eyes to the horrors of war.
Berth and Nobel remain in contact, their love for each other never quite resolved.

When he speculates about creating a prize with his vast wealth, she inspires him to add a prize for peace. In 1905, purely by the scope of her own antiwar activities, Bertha won the Nobel Peace Prize. She was the first woman to do so and the first woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize.
