St. Petersburg, 1860. A member of the imperial family is assassinated. A few days later, the writer Fyodor Michailovitch Dostoevsky meets with Gusiev, a young man committed to a psychiatric hospital. Gusiev confesses that he took part in the terrorist plot and reveals that his fellow conspirators are planning to kill another of the Tsar’s relatives. The young man also gives Dostoevsky the address of Alexandra, their leader. The writer must find her and convince her to call off the new assassination attempt. Dostoevsky is at his wits end, under tremendous pressure from his creditors, the fast-approaching deadline for delivery of a new book and frequent attacks of epilepsy. By day, with the help of Anna Grigorjevna, a young stenographer, he dictates “The Gambler”. At night he continues his extenuating search for the terrorist group. “Your novels – Inspector Pavlovitch tells him – appear to oppose the revolutionaries. The truth is that they are far more provocative than the terrorist manifestos”…
