- Synopsis
- Pedro de Valdivia, leader of the conquest of Chile, has been for 15 years the highest authority in the kingdom. His death in Mapuche territory at the hands of the chief Lautaro, unleashes a struggle to occupy the desirable position of Governor of Chile among four of his captains: the pondered Rodrigo de Quiroga (41), supported by the capital of the kingdom, Santiago; the ambitious Francisco Villagra (42), protector of the cities of the south; the temperamental Francisco de Aguirre (53), head of the northeastern city of La Serena; and the proud Jerónimo de Alderete (37), who at the time is in Spain leading missions commissioned by Valdivia himself. Each of these men is considered the legitimate heir of the late governor, and to possess that power they are ready to face each other and to lead the hard war against the Indians. However, none of them is counting on the Viceroy of Peru to send to Chile his capricious son, García Hurtado, (21) who travels in control of a powerful army determined to put an end to the anarchy and to take power.
