    • Synopsis
    • As the city braces for a storm that threatens to bring chaos, struggling Toronto filmmaker Stephen Everett faces his own personal tempest. Drowning in debt and desperate to finance his dream project, Stephen becomes the target of a relentless collection agency. At the same time, he is determined to star in his film as the ruthless debt collector tasked with reclaiming dues in a crumbling world, merging his creative vision with his own reality. As he wrestles with mounting financial pressure, eerie parallels emerge between his screenplay and the unfolding chaos of his life.

When a publicity stunt to attract investors goes awry, viral footage of Stephen’s humiliation skyrockets him to accidental fame, capturing the attention of day traders and turning him into the unlikely face of a generation’s frustration. Confessional Studios, a struggling film studio decides to back Stephen’s movie, exploiting his newfound infamy and sparking a sudden surge in their stock price.

The similarities between Stephen’s life and his script grow increasingly unsettling as he faces continual degradation at the hands of colorful and opportunistic characters. Through it all, Stephen’s humanity and modesty shine through, even as his world seems intent on stripping him of both.

As Stephen navigates personal indignities and the volatile support of a fickle film industry, he begins to see the strange intersection of his art and reality as both a curse and an opportunity. Realizing that the events of his life mirror his writing, Stephen becomes obsessed with the idea that his screenplay might hold the key to reshaping his destiny. He theorizes that he exists within a “multi-draft-verse,” with alternate realities branching from each version of his screenplay. Convinced there is a universe where he’s a big star, Stephen frantically rewrites his script, scrambling to include all the trendy, politically correct and marketable elements he believes he’s been missing. However, the faster he writes and re-writes, the more frustrating and chaotic the process becomes, culminating in a breakdown just before the storm hits.

The Collection Agent is a dark comedy that examines fame, exploitation and the absurd lengths people go to for relevance. It’s a story of survival—not against apocalyptic odds, but against the indignities of a world desperate for distraction. As Stephen’s journey unfolds and, for all the wrong reasons he becomes a short-lived hero for the disillusioned masses, the film shows that even in the most humiliating moments, there’s room for resilience and redemption.
