    • Synopsis
    • In "The Cassette," set in the late 1990s in Turkey, the country is grappling with the longstanding Kurdish problem, and nationalist sentiment is high. Metin Kilic, a 42-year-old tourism agency owner in Ankara, is a staunch supporter of Turkish nationalism, and he doesn't take kindly to anything associated with the Kurdish cause.

One night, Metin's employees present him with a small gift in Kurdish flag colors to tease him. Metin is immediately incensed, and his anger only grows when the workers of a fast food chain playing a Kurdish singer's cassette tape in his shuttle. Metin demands they turn it off and puts on the radio.

As fate would have it, there is another song by the same Kurdish singer on the radio. The lyrics of the song bring back memories of the 1980 military coup in Turkey, a dark period in the country's history when many people were arrested, tortured, and killed. Metin himself had been arrested and tortured during that time, and the memories of those experiences flood back to him as he listens to the song.

Through the power of music, Metin begins to realize the universal pain that transcends identity and language, and his interest in this singer grows.

The film explores Metin's journey of self-discovery and redemption, as he confronts his own biases and the complexities of identity, belonging, and the human capacity for change.
