    • Synopsis
    • Tsubame is an ordinary 14-year-old girl who has a crush on Toru, the college student next door. She seems to be living happily with her parents, but also feels a little lonely after learning that her father will be having a new baby with her stepmother. Days go by feeling frustrated as she tries to manage her emotions about her family and feelings of love which she cannot share with anyone else. Her only refuge is the rooftop of her calligraphy school. Being out alone on the roof, gazing at the stars and feeling the breeze gives her a moment of freedom. One night, she goes up to the roof like always and finds a kick scooter which she has never seen before. She tries riding it, and suddenly hears someone shout at her, “Keep your hands to yourself!” Tsubame is startled to see appear before her an old woman dressed in garish, colorful clothes. Feeling uneasy, Tsubame tries to leave. But then she looks up to see the old woman flying across the sky on a kick scooter, and that makes her stop in her tracks. “Once you’re grown up, you can do whatever you want,” says the old woman, Hoshi-Ba. Despite herself, Tsubame finds herself telling the eccentric Hoshi-Ba about her love problem. Tsubame keeps the sharp-tongued Hoshi-Ba at arm’s length at first, but as they continue to meet she gradually opens up to her, talking about love and her family. Just as the two get to know each other, one day Tsubame learns that Toru has been injured in a traffic accident…. This is the tale of 14-year-old Tsubame in the blossom of youth, worrying about family issues and matters of the heart, as she encounters the mysterious Hoshi-Ba one summer.
