    • Synopsis
    • After Count Wilfred (Conde Guifré by his Catalan name) is killed in a battle against Muslim soldiers, his daughter Emma is appointed Abbess of a border convent in an area that has been devastated by famine and war.
Convents during this time were important strategic centres of power and were always led by men. Everyone expects Emma to rule from her position in silence and prayer. But instead, the Abbess decides to exercise her power decisively.
Her first steps are viewed with mistrust and hostility by the nuns in the convent and the people in the surrounding areas, for no one appears to accept that a woman is attempting to direct their lives.
The neglect in which the nuns of the convent live has for some of them become an opportunity to live as they choose, far removed from the rules of men. For these nuns, the Abbess’ plans involve renouncing a life far from moral and religious norms and they are not willing to accept this.
Emma will have to confront their opposition in addition to her own doubts and insecurities, but she gradually manages to earn some trust.
After a few years, the Abbess has learned to use her power intelligently and determinedly: the land is being repopulated, hunger is being relieved and at the same time almost everyone is accepting her strict rules.
But these successes have been arousing suspicions in the new Count and Bishop, who feel threatened when they see the Abbess’ power and the territories grow.
They are also viewed with concern by the group of nuns who seek to maintain their freedoms and want to prevent the convent from becoming a prison for them.
Everything will come to a head with the return of Muslim incursions on the border, becoming a pretext for the Count, aided by the Bishop, to confiscate her lands and attempt to confine the nuns to the solitude of the convent. Emma finds herself once again as alone as the day she arrived and will have to confront a trial that seeks to finish her off and her project.
