Anna (late 20s) is the number two chef at one of NYC's most famous restaurants (think Tavern on the Green). She is always trying to make new contributions to the menu — foams and flambés like she learned at Swiss culinary school — but the head chef (also her boyfriend) always shoots her down. He likes cooking traditional food and doesn't want to mess with their recipe for success. Their menu hasn't changed in decades. However, Anna wants to make her own name, and open her own restaurant, but worries she'll never be able to step out of her boyfriend's shadow.
Christian (late 20s) is apprentice to his aunt Daniela (50s or 60s), a Romanian princess. Princess Daniela took him under her wing after his parent's accidental deaths five years ago — her cousins — and she's been grooming him to follow in her footsteps as a titled member of the royal family. (Romania is a democratic republic, but the royal family is still a presence, appearing at public events, helping charitable organizations, and international diplomacy).
Christian dreams of becoming a chef, and is always regaling his aunt with stories from culinary school, mostly starring Anna, his feisty old flame. He's secretly building his own restaurant in Bucharest, and worries how to tell Daniela that he doesn't want to inherit her title. Planning Romania's annual charity Royal Cooking Competition (held in the town near one of their seasonal homes), Daniela hints that this may be her last in public life (we see that she is overworked and doesn't have much of a personal life — she was married once, but it ended in divorce.) She hints mysteriously that she wants to make this competition very special. Christian tries to be excited, but news of his aunt's retirement means he'll be inheriting her title, and stuck in a job he doesn't love. He knows he has to stick up for himself, but he doesn't want to break his aunt's heart.
Back in NYC, Anna gets an invitation to judge the prestigious Romanian cooking competition. Her boyfriend is shocked. "YOU?" You're not even a head chef!" Anna invites him to come along with her, but he refuses, and he doesn't want her to go either — they have a big catering event coming up (think the Met Gala) and he wants her help. Anna talks it over with her friends and they convince her to go. When is she going to get this opportunity again? Anna is always talking about her culinary school days. She decides to take the risk, even if it upsets her boyfriend. She wishes he were more supportive of her dreams.
In Romania, Anna is literally treated like royalty — the judges even get to stay in a palace! Anna and Christian are stunned to pass each other in the hall on the first day of competition. They haven't seen each other since they left culinary school five years ago (Christian's parents died right around graduation, and their relationship fizzled out as their lives pulled them in different directions). Princess Daniela has put them together on the judges' panel
