- Synopsis
- Mia is 25 and a virgin — not by choice. A gynaecological condition makes penetration impossible. Living in Berlin, surrounded by a liberal, international, sex-positive crowd, she is constantly confronted with an activity she cannot take part in. In a city where sex is not just celebrated but omnipresent and hyper visible in the public space — from billboards and sex shops to subway posters and swinger clubs — her exclusion feels even sharper.
  She goes from one gynaecologist to another, enduring endless tests and failed treatments, while her problem is repeatedly dismissed as psychiatric. Only when she finally finds a doctor who takes her seriously does she receive a diagnosis — and treatment.
  Speculum is an absurd comedy that follows Mia through a frustrating, often surreal journey towards her long-awaited "first time" — an experience that turns out to be far less transformative than the culture around her insists it should be.
