    • Synopsis
    • “Snow” begins in September on California’s beautiful Monterey Peninsula when the aspiring painter and housewife, Rose, confides to a priest that she has misgivings about the direction of her 10-year long marriage to Henry, an ambitious businessman.

When she discovers that she is due to have her first baby, she does not tell her controlling husband who -- she discovered after an earlier miscarriage -- doesn’t really want a child. Henry informs Rose that he will quit his job at the end of the year to finally begin his own small business and that she must give up her painting “hobby” to help him. This is a fate that Rose dreads.

Rose is then introduced to a beautiful and worldly Danish poetess and visiting professor, Oona, by Oona’s suicidal girlfriend Christina, at a brunch. The sexual chemistry is immediate.

Oona attempts to help Rose reassess her self-worth and take a risk by convincing her to donate some of her paintings to a charity art auction.

At the auction Rose initially fails to sell her work but then makes a surprise sale. Also, her sense of self-esteem surges to a new level as she receives a glowing review from a major San Francisco art critic.

The story takes a turn when Rose and Oona make passionate love. At about the same time, Rose is invited to participate in a prestigious artist-in-residence program in Tuscany.

Rose reveals to Oona that she is pregnant. Oona is very happy about it and invites her and the baby to move to Sapporo, Japan with her – where her next teaching assignment will begin in January – to live together as a family.

When Rose tells Oona about the wonderful opportunity in Italy, Oona – who’s still emotionally wounded from when Catalina, her Spanish love-of-her-life, abandoned her years earlier – shies away.

Rose makes up her mind to leave for Japan with Oona. She meets with an art dealer and sells some paintings to help finance her new life.

Unfortunately, Henry and Christina find out about Rose’s departure. They confront her at the airport. Rose must stand up for herself and flees them to meet Oona who’s waiting at the gate. As Rose excitedly approaches the gate, she tells Oona that she will go to
Sapporo with her for the holidays but will also begin the artistic residency program in Italy thereafter. Oona sits her down and explains that she too must seek her destiny, Catalina, and must go to Sapporo alone.

Oona tells Rose that Rose is her own inspiration now and no longer needs her. Rose is devastated and lost but she has an epiphany about her life. She boards a flight to the artist-in residency program in Tuscany.

Months later, we see that for the first time in years, Rose – who is now a mother – sitting in a supportive community of fellow artists on a Tuscan hillside -- is really happy and at peace and eager to embrace life anew.
