    • Synopsis
    • Ayesha, a seemingly well-adjusted middle-aged woman, brings up alone her son Saleem in the village of Charkhi, in Pakistani Punjab nearby the Indian border. Ayesha’s husband Afsaan is dead and she manages a living from his pension and by giving Quoran lessons to young girls. The center of her life is her son Saleem, a gentle, dreamy 18 years-old boy.
      The story begins in 1979, in a Pakistan under President General Zia-ul-Haq’s martial law. In a few months the country will become an Islamic state by law. Saleem becomes intensively involved with a group of Islamic fundamentalists, whereas Sikh pilgrims from India pour into the village as every year. One of these pilgrims is looking for his sister, Veru, who has, abducted by Muslims in 1947, awakening heart-rending memories…
