Documentary filmmaker Leonhard Hollmann spent over a year following the progress of three German Bundewehr (regular army) soldiers, one female and two male, as they underwent a form of trauma therapy that deploys horses. The result is a sensitive portrait of individuals who feel they’ve been abandoned. Though often ignored by society-at-large, they find they can count on the camaraderie of the horses for support when the worst flashbacks of war threaten to overwhelm.
Leonhard Hollmann takes a very personal look at each of the various subjects and their very individual experiences. As a silent observer he allows us a very immediate insight of the special approach and efforts of therapist Claudia Swierczek. The protagonists are unusually candid as they provide deeper understanding of the causes and effects of their trauma. In their interaction with the horses we are able to see and feel the soldiers’ emotional and psychological wounds.
The film’s focus is not just on its human subjects – viewers also come to know and love the equine protagonists as these highly sensitive animals give their emotional all to help heal broken human souls.
