- Synopsis
- It is the Edo period and the reign of the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu (1623-1651). Living unnoticed in the city is Genshiro Kusaka, a private detective and hereditary “death handler” who entered into a pact with a “shinigami” named Juran, having promised him ownership of his soul upon his death in exchange for supernatural powers while alive. One day, a wealthy lady client comes knocking on his door seeking help in finding a missing girl. The only clues he has to work with are a description of the girl having a tiny mole above her right eye and possessor of a dagger bearing a Paulownia flower seal. Mesmerized however by a lucrative advance, Genshiro takes the case and quickly sets off on a life-changing investigation.
  
  Meanwhile, the provost of Edo’s Yoshiwara pleasure district, Jin’emon Shoji finds himself beset by tragedy. One by one, ladies of the evening under his charge have are being found murdered outside the district’s walls despite the gates being locked every night.
  
  What is the connection between the beauty spot and the courtesan killings? What darker secrets might Jin’emon be hiding along with his son, Shinnosuke and younger sister, O-Fuji?
  
  The lackadaisical hero, Genshiro Kusaka, soon finds himself staking his life on the defense of a dark truth which pits him against nefarious forces including demons from the netherworld!
