- Synopsis
- England, in the 9th century. Viking Marauders under the command of the cruel Thorfinn plunder a monastery. When his son Hallvard and six of his companions try to prevent a massacre, Thorfinn shows no mercy. He leaves the insurgents half-dead behind. Soon he will return, to capture the inhabitants of the nearby village of Barndyke as lucrative slaves. In their despair, the villagers make a pact with Hallvard and his men: they will let the Northmen live, but they must fight with Barndyke against Thorfinn. Vikings and Englishmen together in battle—this was never before seen on British soil! Hallvard knows that only bravery and shrewdness will help against his father’s superiority. While time is running out, the Northmen train Barndyke’s inhabitants on weapons. Defenses are built, and traps laid. Deep divisions open up between the Christian villagers and their pagan helpers. But when Thorfinn finally arrives, the alliance stands together and achieves a first victory against the surprised attacker. The triumph is short-lived, however—Thorfinn’s reinforcement arrive on a dragonship. It’s his brother Herulf and his men, the dreaded Jomsvikings.
