LA SÉPARATION DES TRACES

By Francis REUSSER

Documentary - Completed 2018

An essay on a filmmaking everyman. A personal story and a history of image, from 1947 to 2017, told through his favourite movies, some of which are little known. Life and art, intertwined. From the freedom to create to the consumer society that devastates dreams just as Coca-Cola dissolves bones.

    • Synopsis
    • In broadcasting, the subject refers to the themes running throughout a work. In this case, the subject and the author – his relationship with the world, the sum of his memories – are but one. Previously unopened archives, images, sounds. Childhood and its locations, an orphan’s loneliness, his first vacation mingling with demobbed GI’s. Juvenile delinquency, in the days of black leather jackets and mopeds, and his first camera – Swiss-French television’s black and white Fernsehen with a turret. His discovery of directing, nights spent in bars, blends of all kinds, as alpine landscapes unfold on Eastman film. His journey as a filmmaker, from the middle of one century to the first quarter of another, with all-out film and digital experimenting. It is the film of someone alive among the dead. Clashing memories spewing nasty titbits about others and about oneself. Its author materializes onscreen – a battered figure, staring at his life as it plays out before him.
