- Synopsis
- 1786. Alto Adige - Südtirol. Antonio is a sullen and reserved man who travels from village to village as a storyteller with his magic lantern, which in those days was known as a Savoyard. While travelling on the road that links Italy to Austria, he crosses paths with a 12-year-old orphan who becomes his assistant.
  
  Antonio’s behavior towards the boy is at first cold and distant but Martino manages to win him over, removing the mask so to speak that conceals Antonio’s personality. The boy wishes to learn how to draw the pictures which Antonio creates for his magic lantern. Although reluctant to begin with, he finally agrees to teach him. In so doing he finds out that Martino has an exceptional talent.
  
  The boy’s drawings increase the success of their performances and they both enjoy their new parent-child relationship until an aristocrat, Lady Hoffmann, seduced by Martino’s artistic talent, proposes to Antonio to leave the boy under her protective supervision so that he might learn the trade from a genuine Grand Master Painter. Antonio must then decide which is the best course of action for both of them.
