6 April 1807 Napoleon signs a decree on formation of Polish Light Horse Regiment of the Imperial Guard (Regiment du Cheveau- Legers Polonais de la Garde Imperiale). French gros-major Piotr Dautancourt is appointed the regiment instructor. He arrives at Poland with his daughter Nicole. The prime of Polish youth enlists in the regiment. One of them is Thomas poor servant fascinated by Napoleon. Knowing that being of noble birth is the only condition under which one can join the regiment, Thomas poses as a noble. Spirited and courageous but also honest and humble man draws attention of Nicole. Their tumultuous and adventurous love is set in the historic background and the events culminate during the charge of Polish Light Horse Regiment on Samosierra. Historians consider the charge one of the most heroic acts in the history of world cavalry.
