Synopsis
"Rusalka" is a bold and original musical fantasy that celebrates the life and work of nineteenth century composer Antonín Dvorák. As a child growing up in Bohemia, Dvorák sees the beautiful Rusalka, a legendary mermaid said to live in the depths of the River Vltava. For Dvorák it is the beginning of a lifelong infatuation with Rusalka, turning into a passion that he will carry in his heart for the rest of his days.
Creatively gifted but personally frustrated, the adult Dvorák becomes a musical superstar across Europe, but he is forced to stand aside when the love of his life Josefine marries another man, leaving him to settle for a marriage to her younger sister Anna, a kind and loyal a woman whom he can never bring himself to truly love.
Moving his family to America, Dvorák finds further acclaim and composes some of his best-known works, but loneliness, depression and homesickness dog him. Unable to find happiness in the world and people around him, Dvorák begins to slip into the fantasy world of his own heart, where his beloved Rusalka is waiting for him.
