- On October 5, 2009, in a small town in Southeast Turkey, bodies of four sisters aged between 12 and 23, wearing full black outfits, were found under a bridge over the Ceyhan River. In the autopsy conducted in the State Hospital, no signs of assault were found and cause of deaths was recorded as drowning. The girls were all alleged to have committed suicide by jumping from the bridge while some eyewitnesses claimed that one of the girls had fallen into the water and the others had jumped to rescue her. No public prosecution followed the case.
  
  On April 15, 2011, in another incident in the same city, 4 brothers and sisters aged between 26 and 31 committed suicide in their vineyard house after 2 unsuccessful attempts following the death of their mother. Suicides of these brothers and sisters with very unusual names and living a very isolated life with their mother have drawn immense public attention. Mass suicides have happened to be very rare except cases in some extreme religious sects and few recorded in Turkey before. Although incidents sought to be unconnected, there have been experts drawing lines between the two. But soon, lawyer father of brothers & sisters has got a jurisdiction banning all investigations on the case based on privacy rights. So none of the incidents have been investigated and discussed in depth.
  
  Parental bonding is a popular field of recent research in psychology but there are very few cases analysed as extreme as involving suicides of multiple adult siblings. In his article, Is there life without mother? Psychoanalytic Quarterly, LXIX, 2000, Leonard Shengold, M.D. illustrates that: ‘ … the compulsive need some children (frequently abused and/or deprived ones) continue to feel as they grow up for submission to and identification with the earliest parental figure. Intra psychic loss is threatened by intense murderous hatred felt toward a parent without whom the child’s survival is not possible. Conflicts over sadomasochistic fantasy, feeling, and action are used to hold on to the parent within and without the mind, and these can dominate the child’s life.’
  
  Rulin is a full-length feature film inspired by these two incidents to expose this dark side of mother-child relationship within the psycho thriller genre.
