Yuko Oshima plays Hachiko Hojo, who works on the famed Odakyu “Romancecar” luxury express train heading from Shinjuku to Hakone. Hachiko is supposed to return to Tokyo, but by chance meets a fishy movie producer (Koji Ohkura). The pair end up going on an incident-filled road trip throughout Hakone. With the full support of Odakyu Railways, filming wrapped on November 13th. Romance is now in post-production.
Writer-director Yuki Tanada and ex-AK48 star Yuko Oshima team up for Romance, slated to be released this autumn. The film marks Tanada's return to directing her own original screenplay for the first time since 2008's One Million Yen Girl.
This winter, Yuko Oshima swept Japan's major film awards for her supporting role in Paper Moon, winning prizes at the Yokohama Film Festival, Hochi Film Awards and the coveted Japan Academy Prize. With her acting career garnering serious attention, Romance is Oshima's first leading film role in six years. Oshima commented on working with Yuki Tanada for the first time: “I was nervous about taking on a lead role, but when I found out the director was Yuki Tanada I became incredibly pleased. I'm a fan of her work, and the screenplay really drew me into her world.”
