    • Synopsis
    • The screenplay Playing Ibsen by Lars Saabye Christensen is based on the famous playwright's stay in Italy. In the summer of 1867, Italy is on the brink of civil war. Henrik Ibsen (39) has left the oppressive and conventional Norwegian society for the more exotic Rome. For some time Ibsen has been writing on Peer Gynt. He sends his wife and son off to Austria for the summer to get some peace and quiet to give the manuscript a finishing touch.
But the muse does not move, and the distractions are many. Suddenly, his manuscript appears to be stolen and Ibsen gets obsessed with revealing the thief. But even that task gets distracted when he gets to know the landlord's wife Irina and daughter Chiara and they invite him to come with them to the island of Ischia.
On Ischia, the frozen Norwegian poet is loosening up. He is drinking, flirting, philosophizing, writing and even learning to dance the tarantella. But the developing triangle drama takes a sudden turn when Ibsen's Danish friend and drinking partner Kiær turns up. Like Ibsen, he is also under the spell of the young and lovely Chiara.
