      (Synopsis)
OBS: Affectionate on the title stands for Carinhoso, a very important song in the Brazilian Jazz culture. This song is well known all over the World and it’s one of the songs that marks the milestone for the Bossa Nova era.
      “Pixinguinha” (pronounced Peesheenguiña) is the
nickname of Alfredo da Rocha Vianna Jr. (1897-1973),
considered the father of Brazilian Popular Music (aka
      Brazilian Jazz).
He was a genius, whose importance was only recognized many years later, thanks to people like Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto, icons of the Brazilian Jazz (Bossa Nova) who propelled Pixinguinha’s musical history
      to the top.
From the moment of his death on a Carnival Day in 1973, inside Our Lady of Peace Church at Ipanema, Rio deJaneiro, and the news that reaches the Ipanema Carnival Band on parade at the same street, the movie presents Pixinguinha’s life and times since he was 14 till 76 years old, his affairs and friendships.
A grandson of black slaves, the boy is born in 1897 and
raises in a household where private “choro” music – a
stylistic rhythm of Brazilian Music - gatherings, featuring
luminaries like Maestro Villa-Lobos, were routine.
At the age of 14, he starts playing publicly at the Rio Branco Theater. In 1919, he founds The 8 Batutas (The 8 Aces), playing in Rio’s movie theater lobbies. Back then, only top musicians could play in theaters. But when Pixinguinha played, the audience rather stayed listening to his music than entering the screen room to watch the film.
The group travels to Paris on tour in 1922 to play at a nightclub in Montmartre. Back then, Brazilian maxixe, a sensual dance, was the talk of the town. According to legend, they met young Louis Armstrong there. In 1927, as a conductor,
Pixinguinha starts the Negro Revue Company, and meets, dates, and marries Beti, a gorgeous chorus girl.
Their marriage will last for 45 years. It is their love story that guides the film. In 1929, as a RCA Director he arranges and records Carmem Miranda's first hit. He discovers himself as sterile, but decides to adopt a friend’s baby, who already had 7 other children.
The alcohol addiction hits his career, and Pixinguinha loses his job and enters into a deep depression. But through a partnership with a young flutist, he will climb up again to success. By the end of the film, we return to 1973, at the Ipanema church, where Pixinguinha dies. The Ipanema revelry band silences. A drum beats to "Carinhoso" ("Affectionate"), his greater success, Brazil's most recorded song of all times.
