    • Amatullah Abdullahi, single and pregnant, works the evening shift as an Agent de Propreté Hospitalière at the Hôpital Saint Joseph in Paris, France. Despite her young age, she has led a fairly tough life. Her father left before she could remember, and her mother was an abusive alcoholic whose death led to Amat's placement in foster care at the age of nine. As an adult, Amat is a virtual loner, counting Francisco Martinez, an elderly fellow Agent de Propreté Hospitalière, as the only true friend she has.

Amat's bleak world brightens tremendously upon the birth of her daughter, Pimpernel. Like all parents, Amat sees her daughter as special. How special? Amat soon sees. On the sixth day home from the hospital, Pimpernel is inconsolable despite Amat's best efforts. In frustration, a frazzled Amat blurts out, "What is it you want?" Imagine her shock when Pimpernel answers.

Pimpernel's words and phrases start out simple. Needless to say, Amat is dumbfounded. Excited and seeking confirmation of her daughter’s ability, but understandably cautious, Amat invites Francisco over to her apartment without telling him why. Unfortunately, whereas Amat hears talking, Francisco hears crying. When Amat confesses as to the reason for the invitation, Francisco, half-jokingly, informs Amat that she should best keep this to herself, lest people think her crazy.

However, the complexity of Pimpernel's words and thoughts soon become greater than Amat's, uplifting Amat's spirits. How can she be crazy if her infant daughter’s language skills and wealth of knowledge has surpassed her own? Could the explanation be that Pimpernel is on a frequency that only Amat can hear?

Elated, Amat works on strengthening the bonds with her exceptional daughter, until un référent de Aide Sociale à l’Enfance from Amat's foster care past, Étienne Corbin, shows up to investigate an anonymous Information of Concern that a minor may be in danger. Satisfied that all is well, Étienne informs Amat not to worry. Alone later, Amat remains subdued, but not Pimpernel. Pimpernel is downright livid. The only way to rectify the situation, according to Pimpernel, is to seek retribution against the anonymous complainant who Pimpernel is positive is their cantankerous onsite HLM Housing Manager. According to Pimpernel, the housing manager simply has to go.

Thus, Pimpernel sets in motion her mother's course of vengeance against all of those who have done her wrong throughout her life. At first, Amat is repulsed, but through Pimpernel's manipulation, she finally capitulates. After the success and euphoric feeling following the housing manager’s murder, killing becomes like a drug … with Amat the addict and Pimpernel the dealer. What little resistance Amat may have had vanishes when Pimpernel dredges up more and more culpable individuals from deep in the recesses of Amat's memory…for there is simply nowhere for Amat to hide now that Pimpernel can also read her mind.
